Army officer, lawyer, diplomat, and author. Corespondence, diaries (1860-66), journals (1847-71) compiled by Ewing from his correspondence and diaries, MSS. of writings, and military reports by others. The military reports relate to an expedition in 1849 to rescue snowbound immigrants to California and include Civil War reports on the West Virginia, Antietam, Vicksburg, and Chattanooga campaigns. Most of the papers are dated in the 1860's. Contact repository for more information.

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. He left his widow, Mary Hoyt Sherman, with eleven children and no inheritance. Indiana lawyer, judge, and Republican politician. Morton served as the state's lieutenant governor in 1861, and as governor from 1861 to 1867.
